Heatwave Grips Karachi: Three Heatstroke Cases Reported
Karachi witnessed a surge in heat-related illnesses as three cases of heatstroke were reported at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) on Thursday.
The affected individuals, identified as youth, were promptly admitted to the Heatstroke Ward for urgent treatment.
Hospital authorities emphasized the severity of the ongoing heatwave and urged citizens to take necessary precautions to safeguard against heatstroke.
They advised residents to minimize unnecessary outdoor activities and stay indoors during peak heat hours.
Karachiites have been enduring sweltering conditions due to the prolonged heat spell, with temperatures soaring to 38°C, accompanied by a feel-like temperature of 41°C.
Meteorologist Jawad Memon forecasted no relief from the scorching weather for at least a week, warning that coastal areas might experience even more intense heat.
As authorities brace for potential heat-related emergencies, the National Disaster Management Authority and provincial bodies have issued advisories urging the public, particularly vulnerable groups like infants, the elderly, athletes, and outdoor workers, to take immediate preventive measures.
Recognizing the seriousness of heatstroke, the advisories highlight the importance of early diagnosis and cooling measures, as delays in treatment can significantly increase mortality rates, with studies indicating rates as high as 80%.
Common symptoms of heatstroke include profuse sweating or the absence of sweating, hot flushed skin, weakness, headache, confusion, and dizziness. Individuals experiencing these symptoms are urged to seek immediate medical attention.
With the heatwave expected to persist, it is crucial for everyone to remain vigilant and prioritize their health and safety during this challenging period.
