Pakistan Faces Severe Weather Threats: Dust Storms, Heatwaves, and Thunderstorms Ahead
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued warnings of impending dust storms and thunderstorms in the northern regions of the country from May 16 to 19.
Furthermore, the current heatwave conditions are anticipated to escalate to “severe heatwave” from May 23 to 27.
The PMD’s daily weather report indicates that high pressure in the upper atmosphere may lead to heatwave conditions, particularly in Punjab and Sindh from May 21, with severe heatwave conditions expected from May 23 to 27.
Daytime temperatures are projected to be 04 to 06°C above normal in Sindh and Punjab from May 21 to 23, and 06 to 08°C above normal from May 23 to 27, while similar conditions are anticipated in Islamabad, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan (GB), and Balochistan during the same period.
Farmers are advised to take necessary precautions, and the general public is urged to minimize direct sunlight exposure and conserve water.
Additionally, the PMD cautions of potential bushfires/forest fires due to extreme dry and heatwave conditions in vulnerable areas of Punjab, KP, and northeast Balochistan.
A shallow westerly wave is expected to affect the upper parts of the country on May 16th evening or night, bringing dust storms, thunderstorms, and isolated rains to various regions, including Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit Baltistan, Punjab, and Sindh.
Specific cities and districts are outlined for each region, indicating the expected weather conditions from May 16 to 19.
