Acclaimed actor Saba Qamar joins Unicef to advocate for children’s rights, focusing on issues like child marriage, education, and gender equality in Pakistan, aiming to empower young people and protect their futures.

On International Day of the Girl Child, the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) announced Saba Qamar as its first National Ambassador for Child Rights in Pakistan.

Qamar expressed her commitment to the role, highlighting her dedication to advocating for children’s rights and supporting Unicef’s mission.

She reflected on her recent travels across Pakistan, noting the challenges faced by women and children, as well as the positive impact Unicef’s efforts have had.

Qamar pledged to use her platform to promote awareness of key issues affecting young people, including child marriage, mental health, gender equality, education, climate change, violence, and poverty.

Pakistan ranks sixth globally for the number of child brides, with 19 million girls married before adulthood.

More than half of adolescent girls become pregnant before the age of 18, posing significant health risks.

Unicef emphasized the urgency of addressing child marriage in Pakistan, urging a comprehensive approach to eliminate the practice and safeguard future generations.

Unicef’s Representative in Pakistan, Abdullah Fadil, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, praising Qamar’s advocacy for women’s and girls’ rights.

Qamar also posted photos of her visits, sharing her experiences and promising to share more stories soon.
