Calls for Action on Kashmir, Gaza, and Islamophobia During UNGA Meeting with Guterres
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif urged UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to push for the implementation of Security Council resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir, advocating for the Kashmiris’ right to self-determination.
Speaking on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly on Wednesday, PM Shehbaz expressed Pakistan’s concerns over India’s actions in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), stressing the need for a peaceful resolution to ensure stability in South Asia.
PM Shehbaz also condemned Israel’s ongoing military actions against Palestinians, calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and accountability for Israel.
He reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for a sovereign Palestinian state and emphasized combating rising Islamophobia globally.
Additionally, the prime minister highlighted Pakistan’s candidacy for the UN Security Council’s non-permanent seat for 2025-26 and welcomed the UN’s “Summit of the Future” initiative, hoping it would help developing nations meet climate and sustainable development goals.
In response, Guterres thanked Pakistan for its active role in peacekeeping and international security.
Separately, PM Shehbaz attended a ceremony marking 50 years of Bangladesh’s UN membership, hosted by Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus.
Both leaders discussed expanding cooperation and strengthening bilateral ties.
PM Shehbaz’s five-day official visit to the U.S. will conclude with his address to the UNGA on Friday.
