Plan sent to Punjab CM for approval, railway to cut travel time to under two hours
Preparations are underway for Pakistan’s first high-speed rail line, with a $1.6 billion proposal for a Lahore-to-Rawalpindi link awaiting approval from the Punjab chief minister’s office.
Developed by the departments of transport and mass transit, the project will allow trains to reach speeds of up to 250 km/h, significantly reducing travel time between the two cities to under two hours.
The proposal calls for an action plan based on a pre-feasibility study, to be funded by the Department of Planning and Development.
However, securing the necessary funding remains a challenge.
If approved, the project will mark a major step in modernizing Pakistan’s transport infrastructure, offering a faster, more efficient travel option between two key urban centers.
