The upcoming CHOGM will be King Charles’ first as head of the Commonwealth.
ISLAMABAD: On Wednesday, King Charles III of the United Kingdom formally invited Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Samoa this October.
During a phone conversation, PM Shehbaz accepted the invitation, noting that the summit would mark a significant moment in the Commonwealth’s history, as it will be King Charles’ first CHOGM since his coronation
According to a statement from the PM Office, PM Shehbaz reaffirmed Pakistan’s dedication to the Commonwealth and its core values, expressing his eagerness to collaborate on critical issues like sustainable development, strengthening democratic institutions, and empowering youth.
He also highlighted his desire to discuss climate change, a topic of mutual interest, given Pakistan’s vulnerability and King Charles’ long-standing commitment to environmental sustainability.
The prime minister conveyed his best wishes to the King and inquired about his health, recalling fond memories of King Charles’ 2006 visit to Pakistan as the prince of Wales.
PM Shehbaz expressed hope that King Charles and Queen Camilla would visit Pakistan again soon.
King Charles III assumed the role of Commonwealth head following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, whose reign lasted over 70 years.
